Wonders of the Solar System |
| Professor Brian Cox reveals how all the beauty and order we see in our cosmic backyard was carved out of nothing more than a chaotic cloud of gas. Chasing tornados in Oklahoma, Brian explains how the same physics that creates these spinning storms shaped the young solar system, and out of this celestial maelstrom emerged Brian's second wonder - the magnificent rings of Saturn. | |||||

The Mating Game |
| Jungles and rainforests are home to 80 per cent of all species on earth, but they cover just 2 per cent of our planet's surface. To win the mating game here, you need to be able to stand out from the crowd. For some it's all about putting on a show, whereas others must fight for their chance of victory. And for a few creatures, working together is the key. Chimpanzees are notorious for their brutality and violence, and for most this is the simplest way to secure a mate. | |||||

Civilisations |
| Simon Schama starts his meditation on colour and civilisation with the Gothic cathedrals of Amiens and Chartres. He then moves to 16th century Venice, where masterpieces such as Giovanni Bellini's `San Zaccaria' altarpiece and Titian's `Bacchus and Ariadne' contested the assumption that drawing was superior to colouring. As the Baroque took hold in enlightenment Europe Giambattista Tiepolo created a ceiling fresco: `Apollo and the Four Continents' at the Bishop's palace in Würzburg. | |||||

Civilisations |
| David Olusoga explores the artistic reaction to imperialism in the 19th century, showing the growing ambivalence with which artists reacted to the idea of progress, both intellectual and scientific, which underpinned the imperial mission and followed the Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution. As European artists questioned their civilisation's `advance', American painters sought to capture an idea of their new nation's `manifest destiny' in landscapes. | |||||

| Freshwater covers only a tiny fraction of the earth's surface, but it is a vital meeting place for many animals - the stage on which millions gather to find a mate. Yet with so little of it available, and often only briefly, the challenge for most individuals is how to overcome intense competition when your rivals are just as dependent on the precious freshwater for their success. | |||||
