Gayle came to prominence in the 1990s after a few decades of obscurity, resulting from him living as a homeless man playing in New York City's streets and subways. Although the saxophone is his main instrument, free-jazz man Gayle also plays the piano, bass clarinet, bass, and percussion instrument. Together with Manolo Cabras on bass and Giovanni Barcella on drums, Charles Gayle performs at The MotorMusic Jazz Sessions.
