	After almost 38 years, Sergiu Celibidache was back on the podium of the Berliner Philharmoniker, rehearsing Bruckner's Seventh Symphony. From 1946 to Wilhelm Furtwängler's return in 1952, Celibidache was the orchestra's principal conductor.

	In 15th century polyphony, suffering is, after love, possibly the most important theme. As in the Flemish Primitives' paintings, the tears flow copiously in the oeuvre of composers such as Josquin Desprez. With this selection of Josquin's finest dark timbres (Miserere mei, De profundis, Absalon fili mi), Cappella Amsterdam perform a breathtaking programme with a palette of muted colours. The concert ends with Musae jovis, Gombert's lamentation on the death of Josquin.

	Jean Paul's novel `Titan', in which an artistically gifted young man, driven by his failure to find his way in society, eventually commits suicide in despair, inspired Gustav Mahler to compose his `Symphony No. 1'. The work did not come easily to Mahler: he composed it between 1887 and 1888 when he, in his twenties, was working as a conductor at the Oper Leipzig. The first version of the work was considered as a symphonic poem in two parts, as its titles told a specific musical story.
