    Mahler

    On 14 November 1987, conductor Simon Rattle made his Berlin Philharmonic debut with Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 6. In retrospect Rattle says that he felt like he was finding his voice that day. Mahler's multifaceted work is now again on the program when Sir Simon appears for the last time as chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic in the Philharmonie in 2018.

    Mahler

    Jean Paul's novel `Titan', in which an artistically gifted young man, driven by his failure to find his way in society, eventually commits suicide in despair, inspired Gustav Mahler to compose his `Symphony No. 1'. The work did not come easily to Mahler: he composed it between 1887 and 1888 when he, in his twenties, was working as a conductor at the Oper Leipzig. The first version of the work was considered as a symphonic poem in two parts, as its titles told a specific musical story.

Among the soloists are Paul Corona (Hortensius), Stephanie Blythe (The Marquise), Kathleen Turner (The Duchess) and Yohan Belmin (Notary). Recorded in the Metropolitan Opera, New York on 2 March 2019. The opera is set in the Tyrol, a picturesque mountain landscape. The Met's production places the action during the First World War.
