    Couperin : leçons de ténèbres

    The French soprano Hanna Bayodi and the Portuguese Ana Quintans join today the Ricercar Consort. The music is by maestro Couperin who, just prior to his death, had his printer's licence renewed in order to be able to publish all his music. However, Couperin's family neglected to pursue the matter, which resulted in the loss of six sets of Leçons de ténèbres, among other things.

    Rossini

    Rossini's popular work - which was first performed in 1816 at the Teatro Argentina in Rome - contains some of opera's most tuneful and recognisable music - from its lively overture to Figaro's Largo al factotum to Rosina's Una voce poco fa. Based on the play of the same title by the French dramatist Beaumarchais (1732-1799), the opera is a delightful rigmarole of riotous situations in a race to win the hand of the young Rosina.

    Mahler - Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen

    Baritone Thomas Hampson and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra perform Gustav Mahler's Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen under the direction of Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990). This 1990 concert was filmed in the great hall of Vienna's legendary Musikverein. This cycle is composed of four songs, whose texts are signed by the composer from the folk poems Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Enchanted Corinth of the Child).
