	On 14 November 1987, conductor Simon Rattle made his Berlin Philharmonic debut with Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 6. In retrospect Rattle says that he felt like he was finding his voice that day. Mahler's multifaceted work is now again on the program when Sir Simon appears for the last time as chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic in the Philharmonie in 2018.

The young American cellist Alisa Weilerstein, who has attracted widespread attention for her passionate yet precise musicianship, joined the orchestra for a breathtaking performance of Edward Elgar's Cello Concerto.

	Fidelio (originally titled Leonore, oder Der Triumph der ehelichen Liebe, which translates to Leonore, or The Triumph of Marital Love), Op. 72, is Ludwig van Beethoven's only opera. This 2018 opera film from the Swiss Theater St. Gallen is based on Jan Schmidt-Garre's highly acclaimed stage production of Beethoven's Fidelio. Otto Tausk conducts the Sinfonieorchester and choir of St. Gallen, as well as many wonderful soloists in a beautifully designed set by Nikolaus Webern.
